Part 2

“I was going to set up a trust for my two children and my two grandchildren,” my father said.

Megan stopped crying like someone had pressed a hand over the whole room.

Chris turned toward her slowly, still waiting for her to explain it in a way that did not make him look at his own wife like a stranger. Sarah had both hands wrapped around the strap of Ethan’s backpack. His little emergency phone was still inside, silent, the battery nearly gone.

My father did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

He looked toward the curtain where Ethan was lying with fluids running into his arm, then back at Megan’s frosting-stained hands.

“After this,” he said, “you will not receive a single dollar.”

Megan’s mouth opened, but nothing came out at first. The money was not the worst part of it. The worst part was that everyone in that hallway understood exactly why he said it.

Then a nurse stepped through the curtain with Ethan’s chart pressed to her chest.

She looked at me first, then Sarah, then at Megan.

“Which adult was responsible for him during those hours?” she asked.

Megan’s knees seemed to loosen.

Chris caught the back of a waiting-room chair, and for the first time all night, he looked afraid of the answer instead of confused by the question.

My father turned his head toward him.

And before Chris could speak, the nurse looked down at the chart again and said there was something about Ethan’s condition that the doctor needed the family to hear before anyone
