Why Does This Kitchen Knife Have Holes and a Forked Tip?

A kitchen knife with holes along its blade and a forked tip may look unusual, but its design often serves a practical purpose. It is commonly a specialized cheese knife*, designed to cut soft cheeses, reduce sticking, and make serving easier. While ordinary kitchen knives are mainly used for general food preparation, this type of utensil combines cutting and serving in one tool.

The holes in the blade help reduce the surface area that touches the cheese, making it easier to slice soft varieties without leaving too much cheese stuck to the metal. This can be particularly useful when cutting creamy cheeses such as Brie and Camembert. The openings may also make the blade lighter, although their main benefit depends on the knife’s specific design.

The forked tip has a different purpose. After cutting the cheese, the two small prongs can be used to pick up individual pieces and transfer them to a plate. This makes the knife especially convenient when preparing cheese boards or serving guests, eliminating the need for a separate fork in some situations. However, not every knife with these features is necessarily designed for cheese, so its overall shape and markings can help confirm its intended use.

Perforated cheese knives work particularly well with soft and semi-soft varieties, while hard cheeses such as Parmesan are often easier to handle with sturdier, specialized tools. An ordinary kitchen knife can still cut many types of cheese, but a dedicated cheese knife can make certain tasks more convenient. To use one properly, place the cheese on a stable cutting board, slice with controlled pressure, and use the pronged tip to serve suitable pieces.

Ultimately, the unusual design is often more practical than it first appears. **The holes can help reduce sticking, while the forked tip makes serving easier.** If you discover one in a kitchen drawer, check its markings and blade shape to determine whether it is a cheese knife or another specialized utensil.
