The Name He Thought He Buried

The little girl blinked at him.

“Lily,” she said.

The man went still.

His fingers tightened around the bread so hard it almost crumbled.

That was the name.

The name he and his wife had chosen years ago for the baby she was carrying before she disappeared.

He looked at the child again, really looked at her.

The eyes.

The mouth.

The softness in her face when she was worried about someone else.

His voice shook.

“What is your mother’s name?”

The girl shifted on her bare feet.

“Eva.”

The sound of it knocked the air out of him.

Eva.

The woman he had spent six years grieving after everyone told him she ran away and never wanted him to find her.

He had believed it.

He had buried the ring.

He had buried the nursery key.

And that morning, after learning the truth too late from the father who had lied to keep them apart, he had walked into the street with a red mark still burning on his cheek and nowhere left to put the pain.

Now her child was standing in front of him, offering him half her bread.

“She told me if I ever saw a man crying alone,” Lily whispered, “I should share my food.”

Tears ran down his face again.

“She always did that,” he said.

Lily frowned a little, then pulled a folded paper from her dress pocket.

“Mom told me if you looked like this,” she said softly, “I should give you this.”

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The writing was Eva’s.

If this is Daniel, don’t let him walk away again. I never left him. They made me disappear.

He closed his eyes, shattered.

When he opened them, Lily was watching him with frightened hope.

“My mom is sick,” she whispered. “She’s in the shelter near the bus station.”

He stood so fast the bread fell from his hand.

“Take me to her,” he said.

Lily reached for his fingers without hesitation.

And on that cold city sidewalk, the man who thought he had lost everything followed the little girl who had just handed him his whole life back.
