The Lake Cabin Deed Betrayed My Family. Grandma Left One Final Warning.

“Tell her what happened in that room.”

The voice behind Linda’s was thin and unsteady.

I knew it before Linda said the name.

“Harold Vance,” she whispered.

Megan’s eyes met mine across the kitchen table. She reached for the pen beside her legal pad and wrote two words.

Record everything.

I put the phone on speaker.

For several seconds, no one spoke. Rain moved across the windows in fine silver lines, and the refrigerator hummed behind me. I could picture Linda standing in the house where I had grown up, probably gripping the counter with one hand while Rachel paced nearby. Then Harold cleared his throat.

“I notarized the document,” he said. “That much is true.”

“You notarized my grandmother’s signature,” I replied. “Was she there?”

“No.”

The word landed with such force that I forgot to breathe.

Linda made a sharp sound. “Harold, you promised–”

“I promised I would tell the truth if she found it,” he snapped. “I have kept quiet for twenty years. I am done keeping quiet.”

Megan leaned toward the phone. “Mr. Vance, this is Megan Brooks, attorney for the property owner. I need you to understand that this conversation is being recorded with your knowledge.””Good,” Harold said. “I want it recorded.”

I wrapped both hands around my coffee mug, though it had gone cold.

“Why did you notarize it?” I asked.

“Because Robert brought it to my office and told me your grandmother had already signed it. He said she was too ill to travel and that the second witness had been present when she signed. I believed him at first. The signature looked convincing.”And in the end, the most shocking part was not that they had forged my grandmother’s signature.

It was that my grandmother had known exactly who they were, Daniel had helped her protect me, and both of them had trusted me to choose myself when the truth finally arrived.
