Six Winters In A Room With Water Stains While A Card I Refused To Touch Sat Inside A Box

For six years after my divorce, I lived in a cramped room with peeling walls and stains spreading across the ceiling. I thought I had been left with nothing except debt and memories. Then the bank called and asked me to come in personally. An account opened in my name held $218,000, built from monthly deposits of the same amount for seventy-two months. The clerk handed me a sealed envelope containing statements and a letter written by Ambrose, my former husband. I had avoided anything connected to him, especially the small box where I had kept a card he once gave me.

Ambrose had been sick before our divorce, though I never knew it. He had hidden his diagnosis from me and even from our children. His letter explained that he believed leaving was kinder than making me spend my later years caring for him. He said he had placed everything he could into the account and deliberately mentioned only $4,000 during the divorce because he knew I would reject anything that sounded like an apology. But then I reached the final page of the letter, and one sentence made my hands start shaking.

I bought a modest house near my daughter in Waukesha, choosing a place with a kitchen filled with morning sunlight. The rest went into accounts for my grandchildren. It seemed like something Ambrose would have wanted, but this time the decision was mine. I didn’t ask anyone whether I was allowed to use the money, forgive him, or remain angry. I finally understood that those choices belonged to me alone.

I still keep his letter in the same box where I once refused to touch his card. I am grateful for what he left, but I won’t pretend his decision didn’t hurt me. He spent decades deciding what I could endure, then made one final choice for me without giving me the truth. Protecting someone from reality isn’t always love. Sometimes it simply takes away their right to choose. The last six years taught me that lesson, and now I refuse to let anyone choose my hardships for me again.
