PART 2: The Child on the Sidewalk Was the Son She Lost

The mother’s hand stopped in midair.

All the anger left her face.

Then the color.

She stared at the seated boy like the whole street had disappeared around him.

“What did you say?”

The boy lowered his eyes fast, suddenly ashamed.

“Sorry,” he whispered. “You look like her.”

Her son looked up at her, confused.

“Mommy?”

But she couldn’t answer.

Because the hungry boy had the same small scar near his eyebrow.

The same dark curls she used to kiss before leaving for work.

The same eyes she had searched for in crowds for four years.

She dropped to her knees on the wet pavement.

Her voice shook.

“What’s your name?”

The boy clutched the bread tighter.

“Malik.”

The mother covered her mouth.

A sound came out of her that didn’t sound human.

Her son stepped closer, scared now.

“Mommy, do you know him?”

She reached toward Malik with trembling fingers, then stopped before touching him, afraid he would vanish.

“I looked everywhere,” she cried. “They told me you were gone.”

Malik’s lips trembled.

“The man said you didn’t want me anymore.”

She shook her head so hard tears flew from her lashes.

“No. No, baby.”

The boy in the camel coat looked between them, then slowly pushed the bread back into Malik’s hands.

“He’s my brother?”

The mother broke completely.

Malik stared at her, trying not to believe too fast.

“You came back?”

She pulled him into her arms, sobbing into his wet hair.

“I never stopped coming back.”

Malik held the bread in one hand and clung to her with the other.

And for the first time in years, the child who had begged strangers for food was held like someone had been starving for him too.
