Part 2

Part 2:
“I’ll help you,” I told Grandma. “But we are not waiting until tomorrow.”

My sister laughed once, sharply. “You cannot hire someone on a Sunday night because she is upset.”

Grandma was not looking at her. She was watching the brass ring in my sister’s fist.

“There is another key,” Grandma said.

The smallest one was almost hidden behind the guesthouse key. My sister tried to fold the ring into her palm, but my son leaned toward Grandma and whispered, “That one opens the little desk in your bedroom.”

He knew because he had helped Grandma move the desk away from a leaking window the previous spring.

My sister turned on him. “Stay out of this.”

Grandma stood so quickly that her chair scraped the floor. “Do not speak to him that way in my house.”

My sister claimed she had used the desk key while helping organize old family photographs. Grandma asked why the framed picture of my son had disappeared from the desk afterward.

My sister called it a coincidence.

Grandma called it a pattern.

She held out her hand again. This time, she did not ask quietly.

My sister removed the guesthouse key and dropped it onto the table, but she kept the other two. “These are for emergencies.”

Grandma stepped closer. “You told me they were lost.”

For several seconds, my sister did not move. Then my son picked up the bent paper crown and placed it gently on Grandma’s head.

That small act seemed to settle something in her.

Grandma walked to the hallway, took an overnight bag from the closet, and asked me to drive her to my house until the locks were changed. My sister followed us, arguing that Grandma was overreacting and embarrassing her in front of the family.

At the front door, Grandma held out her hand one final time.

My sister surrendered the remaining keys—but as Grandma stepped outside with us, she said, “If you leave tonight, do not expect me to come back.”

Grandma closed the door without answering.

Type KEYS and I’ll post Part 3.
