My name is Mallerie, and returning home early from a work trip to Austin, I walked into my living room to find my 5 year old daughter Charlotte terrified and crying. Two police officers were standing over her while my mother Phyllis and my sister Kendra watched coldly with my 4 year old niece Nora. I quickly learned my mother had called emergency services because Charlotte pushed Nora during a dispute over a toy. The officers made it clear they were frustrated by the unnecessary call and warned my family against wasting their time on toddler arguments. Seeing my daughter shaking in fear made me realize that the people I thought were my family were actually a danger to my child. I had grown up in an emotionally cold home and left at age 19 to build my own life as a designer. When I was 27 I had Charlotte, and by age 32 I had established a steady career. After my father passed away suddenly, grief made me vulnerable, and I let my mother and sister back into my life. I quickly became their financial provider, paying my mother for utilities and covering my sister’s car loan just to keep the peace. I tolerated their constant demands because I wanted Charlotte to have a grandmother and a cousin, but watching them use police officers to intimidate her proved they never truly cared about us.
