My Homeless Husband Revealed A Life Changing Secret In His Final Letter

For two years, I regularly brought coffee to Larry, a homeless man who sat outside my subway station. We developed a quiet friendship until I learned that Larry was suffering from severe liver failure and had very little time left. He told me he wanted to marry because he feared dying without anyone legally recognized as family.

Wanting to help, I took Larry to the courthouse, where we had a simple eleven-minute civil ceremony. For the next three weeks, I visited him and brought supplies while he stayed in hospice care. After Larry died, I received a letter revealing that his real reason for marrying me was different from what he had told me. His burial arrangements had already been handled by the county.

Larry explained that he knew I had a habit of trying to solve other people’s problems, so he believed I would agree to his request. He asked me to visit the courthouse and speak with an employee named Margaret. She revealed that Larry had worked there for 28 years, processing marriage licenses.

After retirement, Larry’s medical expenses destroyed his savings. He eventually lost his apartment and became homeless, but his pride prevented him from asking his former coworkers for help.

Margaret showed me the room where Larry and I had married and explained that he had returned there shortly before our ceremony because he was nervous about finally standing on the other side of the desk. She also showed me decades of marriage records.

Whenever couples arrived without family or friends to witness their weddings, Larry would volunteer as their witness. He had done this hundreds of times because he believed nobody should have to marry completely alone.

The heartbreaking truth was that despite witnessing countless marriages, Larry had never been a husband himself. His marriage to me was his first.

In his final letter, Larry admitted that he wanted to experience what it felt like to have someone genuinely choose him as a spouse. He feared that if he told me the truth, I might marry him only out of pity. He said the greatest gift I gave him was not the supplies or money, but simply being there.

Larry’s final lesson changed me. He taught me that people do not always need someone to fix their problems; sometimes they simply need someone to listen and stay beside them. Later, when another homeless man approached me at the subway station, I resisted the urge to immediately rescue him. Instead, I sat beside him and listened.
