My Fathers Final Wish Led Us To A Garage Secret That Left My Brother Pale

The moment my father’s face appeared on that old television screen, my brother turned to leave.
I stepped in front of the garage door before he could get out.

“No,” I said. “You wanted the whole family here. Now you’re staying for it.”

Greg stopped so fast his heel came down on the phone he’d dropped a minute earlier. The cracked screen scraped across the concrete with an awful little sound, and nobody moved to pick it up.

Behind me, Dad sat frozen on the paused television, right beside a half-built crib, one hand still resting on the wood. Nearly twenty relatives stood silent in the driveway and across the grass, none of them daring to cross into the garage.

Greg’s face had gone white minutes ago, right after I hauled that door open. At first I’d thought it was the furniture that did it. All that beautiful furniture nobody knew about.

Then I’d seen the tapes.

One was labeled in Dad’s careful hand: FOR CHLOE — WITH EVERYONE PRESENT.

The other one said: GREG’S PROMISES.

Ms. Richards, my father’s lawyer, reached over and pressed play again.

Dad looked straight into the camera, straight out of the past, straight at me.

“Greg,” he said. “I asked you three times to tell Chloe the truth.”

My brother closed his eyes.

And I want you to understand something, before I tell you the rest of it. Six days before that moment, if you had asked me who in this world I trusted most, I would not have hesitated for even a second.
I was the one who’d held the key. I was the one who’d opened the door.

And in the front room, by the window, the moons on an empty rocking chair caught the last of the light, waiting patient as anything for whatever my future turned out to be.
