My Family Skipped Three Funerals—Then an $18.7M Headline Hit

Six months later, one headline about me sent my entire family into a panic.

When I called my parents from the hospital chapel, my hands were still streaked with ash from the accident scene.

I remember staring at my fingers while the phone rang, wondering why I had not washed them. There were sinks nearby. Nurses had offered me water. Someone had even brought me a paper cup of coffee that sat untouched beside me.

But washing my hands felt impossible.

The ash was from the place where my life had ended, even though I was somehow still standing.

That morning, my husband, Ethan Miller, had been driving our children along Interstate 95 outside Richmond, Virginia.

Lily was seven.

Noah was four.

A truck driver fell asleep, crossed the median, and crushed their SUV before Ethan could get out of the way.

All three of them died.

I survived because I had not been in the car.

That fact became its own kind of punishment.

I kept replaying the ordinary decision that had separated us that morning. Ethan had taken the kids. I had stayed behind. There had been no warning, no strange feeling, no last-minute argument that might have made one of us change plans.

They had calmly told me they could not.

Now someone from that same family was pounding on my front door as if getting inside could not wait another second.
