My Ex-Husband Sold Hunting Rights on the 80 Acres Grandpa Left Me, So I Gave the Season to Three Army Veterans for Free

Kurt Ostrowski had been hunting on my grandfather’s land for eleven years. He had attended my wedding, shared countless Packers games with my family, and spent every November hunting along the wooded ridge behind the old cornfield. But that cold November morning, when he stood in front of me with frost covering his boots, I could tell something was terribly wrong. Behind him stood two other hunters, Mike Pruett and Russ Lindahl, both looking uncomfortable. Beside me was Dale, a fifty-eight-year-old Army veteran who had come to enjoy the hunting season I had offered him and two fellow veterans for free.

Kurt approached Dale and noticed the faded military patch on his coat. They exchanged a few words about their service before Kurt finally turned toward me. “Amy, what do you mean you didn’t cool off?” he asked. “Brad told us you were fine with it. He said you agreed.” I stared at him, confused. “Agreed to what?” Kurt reached into his orange vest and handed me a folded document. Across the top, it read HUNTING LEASE AGREEMENT. My name appeared as the owner of the eighty acres, and Kurt was listed as the person renting the hunting rights for November. The agreement claimed I had received four thousand dollars in cash.

Before leaving that afternoon, Dale stopped beside the old wooden stand and looked across the land. “Your grandfather must have loved this place,” he said. I smiled because I could almost hear Arvid reminding me to take care of every inch of it. Brad had thought the eighty acres were just a way to make quick money, but he had never understood what they meant to me. They carried my childhood, my grandfather’s lessons, and memories no amount of money could replace. I still had legal matters to resolve, but I no longer felt powerless. I had protected my land, kept my promise to the veterans, and learned something important: being divorced from someone does not mean surrendering what belongs to you.
