My 10-Year-Old Daughter Tested Positive for Pregnancy

When my ten-year-old daughter Sophie tested positive on a pregnancy test, I was terrified. At the hospital, doctors discovered there was no pregnancy, but her beta-hCG level was unusually high. Further examinations revealed a mass near her ovary.

Sophie then confessed that Eric, the man she had always called Dad, had given her a pink bottle of “vitamins” and told her to keep it secret. The bottle had no proper medical information, and testing showed it contained a hormone-modulating substance that was not approved for children.

Detective Harris began investigating Eric. Hospital records showed that he had previously taken Sophie for treatment without telling me. Investigators also found syringes, medical notes documenting her symptoms, and evidence that Eric had been monitoring her condition for months.

Daniel, whom Eric had accused of harming Sophie, insisted he was innocent. He eventually revealed that he had seen Eric meeting a doctor at a private clinic and discussing Sophie’s hormone levels.

After Sophie’s mass was surgically removed, investigators uncovered an even more disturbing motive. Eric had taken out a one-million-dollar life-insurance policy on Sophie, naming himself as the beneficiary. He had allegedly been creating the appearance of a serious illness so that the insurance would eventually pay out.

The doctor involved, Dr. Mercer, admitted that Eric had misled her about Sophie’s condition and had paid her large sums of money. Eric was eventually arrested and pleaded guilty to multiple charges. The insurance policy was cancelled, and the court ordered him to have no contact with Sophie.

Sophie underwent treatment and chemotherapy. Three months later, her scans showed no evidence of active disease. She slowly regained her strength, returned to school, and began living like a normal child again.

Two years later, Sophie was healthy and presented a school science project about hormones. She told her mother and Daniel that she wanted to become a doctor—one who believes children.

The terrifying experience had changed their lives, but Sophie survived. She was finally safe, healthy, and free from the person who had betrayed her trust.
