I needed $3,200 for cancer surgery, so I called my son for help. He told me, “We just closed $12 million,” then coldly said, “There’s no money for you, Dad.”

Part 1

It cost $3,200 to save my life. That was the amount the clinic required before scheduling surgery to remove the tumor near my stomach. After forty-two years as a machinist and a lifetime of sacrificing for my children, I never imagined I would have to beg for help. My son Elliot had just celebrated closing a twelve-million-dollar real estate deal, yet when I asked if he could help cover the deposit, he sighed impatiently and said, “There’s no money for you, Dad.” Those words hurt far more than the diagnosis. A few hours later, my daughter Claire drove across the state carrying an envelope with two thousand dollars. She admitted she had sold her late mother’s favorite gold bracelet because she refused to let me fight cancer alone. Looking at that envelope, I realized the richest person in my family was not the one with the largest bank account but the one with the biggest heart.

Three days later, Elliot appeared unexpectedly at my front door, furious after learning what Claire had done. He accused her of making him look heartless and insisted everyone would think he had abandoned his own father. I listened quietly as he defended his reputation instead of asking about my health. Then Claire arrived with groceries and news from the clinic. If the remaining balance was paid by the next day, my surgery could happen that Thursday. Elliot’s expression shifted for the first time since entering the house. He slowly reached into his coat, pulled out his checkbook, and before anyone could speak, another car turned into the driveway.
