I Married My Wealthy 72 Year Old Boss So My Daughter and I Would Have a Place to Live

I froze when I heard the front door open. The lawyer had already left, and Emily was asleep upstairs. Then I heard footsteps. I rushed downstairs and found the lawyer standing there with one final envelope. “Richard left one last instruction,” he said, handing it to me.

Inside was a short letter. If you have opened the locked room, then you finally know enough to understand why I chose you. My hands trembled as I read the next line: The man in the photograph is not your father. He was your mother’s brother, Daniel. “Where is he?” I whispered. The lawyer looked away. “He died eleven years ago.”

Then came the truth. Daniel had spent years searching for me after I disappeared into foster care. He eventually found Richard and told him that someone had deliberately separated me from my family. My father, Richard discovered, was still alive. He had tried to return years ago, but my mother believed he was dangerous and kept him away.

For thirty-five years, I had believed my mother abandoned me. Now I learned she had been trying to protect me. Before she died, she asked Richard to make sure I was safe. He had kept his promise by watching over me from a distance until he knew I was ready.

Then I opened Richard’s final letter. My dear Anna, you once told me nobody stays. You were wrong. Some people leave because life gives them no choice, but that doesn’t mean they stop loving you. I didn’t marry you because you needed a home. I married you because I needed a family.

I pressed the letter against my heart and cried. Richard wrote that I had given him more love in five years than he had received in seventy-two. He begged me to care for Emily, build a life, laugh again, and remember that I was never unwanted.

Emily appeared at the top of the stairs. “Is Grandpa Richard still our family?” she asked. I pulled her into my arms. “Yes,” I whispered. “He always will be.” Years later, we still visited his grave. Emily always left a chess piece beside his flowers. And every time I saw it, I remembered Richard’s final words: You were never unwanted.
