I am 65 years old. I got divorced 5 years ago.

My ex-husband left me a bank card

with 3,000 dollars on it.

I never touched it.

Five years later, when I finally went

to withdraw that money… my whole body went numb.

After thirty-seven years of marriage,

Richard walked away from me

like a man discarding an old coat

he no longer needed.

The day our divorce became official

at a courthouse in Chicago,

he pressed a bank card into my hand.

His voice was so calm

that somehow it made everything hurt even more.

“”””Take it. That should be enough

to keep you going for a little while.””””

I refused to cry in front of him.

I would rather have swallowed glass.

I slipped the card into my handbag

and watched Richard disappear down the courthouse hallway

without looking back.

Like I was something he’d already buried.

Afterward, I rented a tiny room

with water stains across the ceiling

and a window that rattled every winter.

I cleaned strangers’ kitchens.

Watched cars outside a pharmacy for cash.

Collected bottles and cardboard

whenever there was barely anything left

in the cupboard except salt and tea bags.

Some nights, I went to sleep hungry

because I needed what little food I had

to last another day.

But I never touched Richard’s card.

Part of it was pride.

Mostly, it was anger.

Those $3,000 felt like an insult

sealed inside a piece of plastic.

His way of placing a priceOutside, the maple leaves moved gently.

The evening light touched the table,

the empty plates,

and the old card drawer.

I had once thought the card

held the last word

Richard had given me.

It did not.

The last word was mine,

and it was simple.

I was here.

I was still here.

And tomorrow,

I would wake up in a home

I had chosen,

with people who knew my name,

and a life that finally belonged to me.
