Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Yellowed, dingy pillows can make even the crispest bedding feel stale. But before you toss them out (or worse—hide them under shams forever), know this: most bed pillows can be cleaned right in your washing machine and restored to a fresh, fluffy, sweet-smelling state—with just a few simple steps.

Whether yours are down, feather, polyester, or memory foam (note: memory foam can’t be machine-washed—more on that below), here’s how to safely revive them so they look and smell like new.

🧺 Step-by-Step Guide to Washing Pillows (Standard Fillings: Down, Feather, or Polyester)
1. Check the Care Label First
Most down, feather, and synthetic pillows are machine-washable.
Memory foam or latex pillows must be spot-cleaned only—never submerged or washed.
2. Wash Two at a Time
Always wash pillows in pairs to balance your machine and prevent agitation damage.
Use warm (not hot) water to avoid shrinking or damaging fibers.
3. Use the Right Cleaner
Detergent: 1–2 tbsp mild liquid laundry detergent (no bleach!).
Boosters for Whiteness & Freshness:
½ cup baking soda (softens water, neutralizes odors)
½ cup white vinegar (added to the rinse cycle—breaks down residue, brightens, and deodorizes without leaving a vinegar smell)
Optional: ¼ cup oxygen bleach (like OxiClean)—never chlorine bleach, which yellows fabric!
4. Choose the Gentle CycleUse delicate or extra-rinse cycle to ensure all soap residue is flushed out (leftover detergent = stiff, smelly pillows).
5. Dry Thoroughly (This Is Crucial!)
Tumble dry on low heat with 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff and prevent clumping.
Dry completely—this can take 2–3 cycles! Damp pillows = mildew.
Check every 30 minutes, fluffing by hand to break up clumps.
Pillows are done when no cool spots remain and they feel uniformly dry and airy.
