French rock icon dies at 68 following cancer diagnosis

French music woke up shattered. Catherine Ringer, the wild, fearless soul of Les Rita Mitsouko, is gone at 68, taken almost overnight by a brutal, fast-acting cancer. Fans, friends, and even the president are in shock.

She was born in the shadow of history and horror, daughter of a Holocaust survivor whose story she later turned into song. That early darkness never left her, but she alchemized it into something fierce and luminous. With Fred Chichin, she crashed into French rock like a meteor, inventing a sound that didn’t ask permission: part cabaret, part punk, part dream. Their hits—“Marcia Baïla,” “C’est comme ça,” “Andy”—were not just songs, but scenes in a movie only they could have directed.

When cancer stole Fred in 2007, it almost stole her voice too. She stopped singing, even in the shower, frozen in grief. But slowly, stubbornly, she returned—solo now, yet never alone, carrying him into every note. She fought for women, for the planet, for freedom of being. Onstage in Paris this February, she still burned. Now France stands in silence, replaying her voice, realizing that in losing Catherine Ringer, it has lost a piece of its own heart.
