Fifty Years Later, A Yellow Cafeteria Card Returned To Me From Nowhere

I woke from anesthesia to a nurse who would not look at me. My three children had been at the hospital during my heart surgery, but they had left nearly two hours before I opened my eyes. “Why did they go?” I asked. The nurse hesitated before answering, “They said parking was getting expensive.” Twenty-five dollars. Nathaniel had promised to leave his accounting office early. Rowena had said she would bring flowers. Foster planned to come after his sales calls. The monitor beside me quickened as I stared toward the window, fighting back tears.

Then a man appeared in the doorway. He wore a dark suit and wire-rimmed glasses, and he looked directly at me. “Are you Mrs. Brennan?” he asked. “Yes.” “My name is Theodore Brennan. You probably don’t remember me.” He reached into his coat and removed a small, faded yellow card. “You bought my lunch every day when I was in third grade.” I stared at the card.

Suddenly, I understood. They had not left because parking cost twenty-five dollars. They had left because they had a two o’clock appointment to discuss taking control of my finances.

Something inside me went completely still. Theodore did not tell me what to do. He simply sat beside my bed and waited. I did not scream at my children or call an attorney that night. Instead, I made decisions quietly.

I changed my will, closed the joint account, and moved my financial affairs into arrangements requiring my consent alone. Then I wrote each child one page. I told them exactly what I knew. I told them I loved them, but love did not mean surrendering control of my life. Theodore checked on me often, never asking for anything.
