A Rich Couple Refused To Pay My Elderly Father For Painting Their Beautiful Lake House

When the Whitakers refuse to pay the narrator’s father for his work on their lake house, he takes an unexpected step to recover the $5,300 he is owed. The following morning, he files a mechanic’s lien against the property. Days later, when a real estate agent arrives with potential buyers, the lien threatens to stop the sale immediately. The agent explains that the transaction cannot proceed while the property title carries an unresolved debt, prompting Mr. Whitaker to rush outside and angrily demand an explanation.

Instead of arguing, the father calmly produces a completion certificate bearing Mr. Whitaker’s own signature. The document confirms that the work was finished to the homeowner’s satisfaction and that $5,300 remained unpaid. Although the father originally described the certificate as a record for his files, it also provides crucial evidence supporting the lien. Combined with a coffee can filled with initialed change slips documenting the work, the paperwork leaves the Whitakers with little room to dispute the debt.

The father’s retired attorney friend, Ed Kowal, explains that the lien will remain on the property until the full amount is paid, including the late fees and filing costs specified in the contract signed in June. Without resolving the debt, the Whitakers cannot sell the lake house or obtain financing against it. The prospective buyers quietly return to their car, realizing the sale cannot proceed. Ed observes that Mr. Whitaker had challenged the father to sue, but the father has already taken the necessary legal steps.
