The doctor involved, Dr. Mercer, admitted that Eric had misled her about Sophie’s condition and had paid her large sums of money. Eric was eventually arrested and pleaded guilty to multiple charges. The insurance policy was cancelled, and the court ordered him to have no contact with Sophie.

Sophie underwent treatment and chemotherapy. Three months later, her scans showed no evidence of active disease. She slowly regained her strength, returned to school, and began living like a normal child again.
