I Called off the Engagement after Visiting My Future in-Laws’ House for the First Time

After three years of dating, Esther finally met her boyfriend William’s parents, expecting a warm welcome. However, what she experienced was unsettling enough to call off the engagement.

At the Hamiltons’ home, Esther felt like an outsider as Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton showered William with overwhelming affection. “Oh, my baby! We’ve missed you so much!” Mrs. Hamilton exclaimed, ignoring Esther. During brunch, Mrs. Hamilton cut William’s pancakes and praised him excessively for trivial things. “William, you always know the best shows to watch,” she said, making Esther uneasy.

The unease grew when Mrs. Hamilton showed Esther their bedroom, filled with William’s photos and memorabilia, including bedsheets with his face. “We’re just so proud of him. Isn’t he wonderful?” Mrs. Hamilton beamed. Esther found this shrine-like display disturbing.

That night, Esther confronted William about his parents’ behavior. “It’s like a museum dedicated to you. Doesn’t it… seem a bit much?” she asked. William dismissed her concerns, leading to a heated argument. The next morning, after another uncomfortable interaction with Mrs. Hamilton, Esther decided to leave, realizing she couldn’t marry into such an obsessive family. “If you can’t handle how much they love me, maybe you’re the one with the problem,” William snapped, ending their relationship.
