The padlock snapped, and Officer Bell pulled the closet door open.
At first, all I saw were folders, cardboard boxes, and a small metal safe tucked behind a stack of towels. Then I noticed the envelopes bearing my name.
“Hannah,” Officer Bell said quietly, “you need to see this.”
I stepped closer.
Inside the folders were copies of my military records, bank statements, insurance documents, and papers connected to our house. Several documents carried signatures that looked like mine—but I had never signed them.
My hands began to tremble.
Someone had been trying to access my savings and make financial decisions in my name.
Then I found a thick envelope marked LILY — GUARDIANSHIP.
I opened it carefully.
The documents suggested Derek had been preparing to claim that I was an unfit mother because of my military deployments. There were printed emails discussing how my absence could be used against me in a custody dispute.
One sentence made my stomach turn.
Once Hannah returns, we need to make sure she cannot take Lily away from us.
Us?
Before I could ask what that meant, my phone rang again.
Derek.
Officer Bell motioned for me to answer.
“What did you find?” Derek demanded.
“Documents with my name on them. Papers about taking custody of Lily.”
He went silent.
“Who helped you prepare these?”
“You don’t understand,” he finally muttered. “Mom said it was the only way.”
His mother had been involved all along.
Then Officer Bell discovered a second folder containing receipts and messages connected to the missing money. The evidence raised serious questions about where our savings had gone and whether the spending was only part of a larger plan.
I photographed the documents while the officers secured the scene.
At the hospital, Lily was receiving treatment, and I refused to leave her side.
Later that evening, Patricia called me.
“You need to stop this investigation,” she said coldly. “You’re destroying your family.”
I looked through the hospital window at my sleeping daughter.
“No,” I answered. “Your family destroyed itself when it abandoned a four-year-old child.”
I ended the call.
Derek and his relatives would have to answer the investigators’ questions, and I would work with my attorney to protect Lily and secure my finances.
But as I returned to my daughter’s bedside, I discovered one final message hidden among the papers.
It revealed that someone had known Lily was alone long before I arrived home.
