For three years, Nathaniel’s wife had been suspicious about his weekly trips to Memphis every Tuesday. She eventually recognized Rosalind, a woman from Nathaniel’s past whom she had once believed he had betrayed her with. Rosalind had returned to the area after a divorce and had been diagnosed with stage-three cancer. She had no family left, and Nathaniel was the only person from her past she could turn to.
Nathaniel explained that he had started driving Rosalind to Vanderbilt Hospital in Memphis for her cancer treatments. He stayed with her during appointments, held her hand when she was frightened, and drove her home afterward. What shocked his wife most was discovering that Nathaniel had legally married Rosalind so she could receive medical coverage through his insurance. He had changed his insurance plan and added Rosalind as a spouse because her existing coverage could not pay for everything she needed.
His wife was devastated and furious because Nathaniel had hidden an entire second marriage from her. Although she understood that he had been trying to help a dying woman, she could not ignore that he had lied and broken the law. For years, she had imagined that he was having an affair, but the truth was that he had been spending every Tuesday helping Rosalind survive cancer.
Eventually, Rosalind became critically ill and entered hospice care. Nathaniel’s wife went to see her and found Nathaniel holding her hand. Instead of confronting Rosalind, she apologized for the anger she had carried toward her without knowing the truth. Rosalind was too weak to speak, but she reached out her hand, and the two women held hands while Nathaniel cried beside them.
Rosalind died in October. Afterward, Nathaniel began the complicated legal process of ending the marriage he had created for her insurance. His wife acknowledged that he had lied and broken the law, but she also recognized the good he had done. He had spent three years caring for a woman who had nobody else, paying expenses her insurance could not cover and supporting her through treatment.
Despite everything, Nathaniel and his wife remained together. She never decided that his actions were completely right, but she came to understand why he had done them. In the end, she realized that love, mistakes, sacrifice, and compassion can sometimes exist together in painfully complicated ways.
