“Your Honor, are you injured?” Frank asked, moving toward my bed.
I nodded, fighting back tears as another officer carefully took Owen from Margot’s arms and returned him to his bassinet.
“Arrest her!” I whispered. “She struck me and tried to take my son.”
Margot burst into hysterical laughter.
“You can’t arrest me! I’m his grandmother! Bridget has been waiting downstairs, and this was all agreed upon!”
Frank glanced at the papers scattered across my bedside table.
“Agreed upon by whom?”
Nobody answered.
He picked up the documents and began reading. Suddenly, his expression darkened.
“These papers contain a forged signature,” he announced.
Margot’s face turned pale.
I stared at her in disbelief. “You forged my signature?”
She stepped backward. “I was only trying to help my daughter!”
Before Frank could respond, Graham rushed into the room. He stopped when he saw me crying, my cheek swollen, and security officers surrounding his mother.
“What happened here?”
I pointed toward the papers.
“Your mother tried to take Owen and force me to surrender my parental rights.”
Graham looked at Margot.
“Mom, tell me she’s lying.”
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Then Frank revealed something even more disturbing. The hospital’s security cameras had recorded Margot entering the maternity ward carrying documents, and the footage showed her taking Owen from his bassinet.
The police were called immediately.
But the biggest shock came when Bridget arrived, demanding to know why nobody had brought her the baby.
Graham confronted his sister.
“Did you know Mom was planning to take our son?”
Bridget burst into tears.
“She told me Imogen had already agreed! She said the adoption was legal!”
I felt my heart breaking. Bridget might have been desperate for a child, but she had nearly become part of something unforgivable.
As officers escorted Margot away for questioning, she turned toward me.
“You’ll regret humiliating this family!”
I held Willa close while Graham cradled Owen.
“No,” I replied quietly. “My children will grow up knowing that nobody has the right to steal their future.”
And as the hospital doors closed behind Margot, I realized this was only the beginning.
Because the investigation was about to uncover who had helped her prepare those forged documents.
