Part 2: Rose read the line again and again until the paper blurred in her hands.

What baby?

Her son and his wife had told everyone for three years that they couldn’t have children.

That grief had changed him. Hardened him. Pulled him away from everyone who loved him.

Rose reached deeper into the envelope and found one more thing:

a tiny hospital bracelet.

On it was written:

Baby Girl — Rose Family — 3 years ago

Her breath stopped.

Three years earlier, on the same night her daughter-in-law supposedly lost the baby, Rose had been told never to ask questions again. Her son had cried like a broken man. The doctors said the child didn’t survive.

But the bracelet in her hand told another story.

At the bottom of the note, her son had written:

“I found out last week. She lied to me. Our daughter lived. She sold the truth for money and told me the child died. I couldn’t speak in front of her. The cash is everything I saved after selling my car. Tomorrow at 9 a.m., go to St. Mary’s orphan records office. Ask for Elena. She knows where our little girl was taken.”

Rose collapsed into the chair, one hand over her mouth.

All those years… her granddaughter had been alive.

And the son everyone called heartless had been the only one trying to put the family back together.

The next morning, Rose arrived at the records office with the bracelet in her pocket and the note in her hand.

The clerk looked at the bracelet… then at Rose’s face…

and started crying.

“She’s not in the system anymore,” Elena whispered.
“Your granddaughter was adopted.”

Rose’s voice shook. “By who?”

Elena opened an old file, stared at the name, and turned the paper toward her.

Rose froze.

Because the adoptive mother’s last name…

was her daughter-in-law’s maiden name.
