My Son Asked Me Not to Come to His Graduation

Amanda, 56, is confused when her only son Daniel asks her not to attend his college graduation. She has waited years for the moment and cannot understand why he suddenly wants her to stay away. A week before the ceremony, Daniel only tells her to trust him.

The night before graduation, Daniel’s girlfriend Sophie secretly calls Amanda and begs her to come. She says Daniel does not know that she discovered something important. Amanda attends the ceremony and is shocked to see Richard, Daniel’s father, whom she has not seen in eleven years. Daniel had secretly invited him and even hugs him after receiving his diploma.

Amanda later discovers that Sophie is pregnant and that Daniel contacted Richard because he wanted to learn about his father’s medical history for the baby. Their conversations eventually became a relationship between father and son.

Richard explains that he had struggled with alcohol, gambling, debt, and addiction. Amanda had left him after he drove while drunk with nine-year-old Daniel in the car. Richard later entered treatment and eventually became sober, but Amanda refused his request for supervised visits because she believed Daniel had finally stopped waiting for his father.

The truth becomes more complicated when Daniel learns that Richard had sent letters and birthday cards for years. Amanda had kept some of them instead of giving them to Daniel because she believed she was protecting him from being hurt again.

Daniel is angry with both parents. Richard admits that he should have fought harder to remain in his son’s life, while Amanda admits that she made the decision for Daniel instead of allowing him to choose for himself.

Eventually, Daniel and Amanda begin repairing their relationship. Daniel also slowly rebuilds his relationship with Richard. Months later, Sophie gives birth to their daughter, Nora, bringing Amanda and Richard together as grandparents.

Amanda realizes that there was no single person responsible for everything that happened. Richard abandoned his family, Amanda hid important parts of the truth, and Daniel kept the graduation reunion secret. In the end, Amanda accepts that protecting her son also meant allowing him to know the truth and make his own choices.
