Young Student Remains in Critical Condition After School Shooting in British Columbia

A 12-year-old student remains in critical condition following the deadly mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Tumbler Ridge, which occurred on Tuesday, February 10.

Authorities have confirmed that the attack claimed nine lives and injured at least 27 others, making it one of the deadliest school-related acts of violence in Canadian history.

Victim Hospitalized in Vancouver

Twelve-year-old Maya, a student at the school, was among those seriously injured. She was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for emergency treatment.
According to reporting by People Magazine, Maya sustained gunshot wounds to her head and neck and remains under intensive medical care.

Her mother, Cia Edmonds, shared an emotional message on social media describing her daughter’s condition.

“I’m writing this post sitting in Vancouver Children’s Hospital while my daughter fights for her life,” she wrote.
“My 12-year-old daughter is fighting for her life while doctors try to repair the damage.”
Despite the seriousness of the injuries, Edmonds expressed cautious gratitude that her daughter survived the initial attack, while extending condolences to other affected families.

Family Provides Update on Recovery

A family member, Krysta Hunt, told CityNews that Maya recently underwent surgery to address internal injuries.

“She had surgery to try to repair the brain bleed, and now doctors are waiting to see how she responds,” Hunt said. “She’s fighting for her life right now.”

Doctors are reportedly continuing to monitor whether a bullet in her neck passed through or remains lodged. Family members described her survival so far as a sign of strength, though her condition remains serious.

Community Support and Fundraising

In response to the tragedy, supporters have organized a fundraising campaign to help cover Maya’s medical and recovery expenses. A GoFundMe page has raised more than $255,000, reflecting widespread community and national support.
