Legendary Hollywood Golden Age singer dies at 96

One of television’s golden voices has fallen silent. Peggy King, the singer and actress who brought warmth to America’s living rooms, has died at 96, leaving behind a career that stretched from radio studios to Hollywood’s brightest stages. Now, the story of the woman known as “Pretty Perky Peggy King” returns to the spotlight, stirring decades of treasured memory.

Peggy King died Sunday, October 25, at Saunders House in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, her publicist Alan Eicher confirmed to Variety. She had previously been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1930, she began singing on Cleveland radio after high school. Her path led to The Mel Tormé Show, an advertising jingle, and a Columbia Records contract. On The George Gobel Show, she became a familiar presence from 1954 to 1957.

Her accomplishments reached beyond variety television: an Emmy nomination, a performance at the 1955 Academy Awards, and film appearances including The Bad and the Beautiful and Zero Hour! followed. Honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960, King continued performing into her eighties and released Songs a la King in 2016. She is survived by her daughter, Suzy Rudofker. Her recordings preserve the voice that carried her through an enduring life in entertainment.
