Joe Biden with tears in his eyes make the sad announcement.

Biden Steps Aside: Calls for Unity and Defense of Democracy

President Joe Biden, speaking from the Oval Office, announced he will not seek re-election in 2024, saying he loves the country more than the presidency. He framed his decision as a step to unite his party and pass the torch to a new generation.

Biden reflected on America’s turning point, urging the nation to choose unity over division and uphold values like freedom, justice, and decency. He stressed that defending democracy is greater than any one person and called on Americans to work together against hate and extremism.

Over the next six months, Biden pledged to keep fighting for affordable living, civil rights, voting rights, climate action, and gun safety. He reaffirmed his Cancer Moonshot initiative and his support for Supreme Court reform.

On foreign policy, he highlighted efforts to keep America out of new wars, strengthen NATO, counter China’s rise, support Ukraine, bring peace to the Middle East, and secure the return of hostages and wrongfully detained Americans.

Reviewing his term, Biden cited recovery from the pandemic and economic crisis, record job creation, wage growth, reduced inflation, and the smallest racial wealth gap in 20 years. He celebrated progress in manufacturing, infrastructure, health care access, prescription drug price cuts, and veterans’ support.

He noted landmark achievements: major climate legislation, the first significant gun control law in decades, lower violent crime rates, stronger borders, and appointing the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. Biden said his administration reflected America and served all citizens.

Thanking Vice President Kamala Harris as a strong partner, Biden urged Americans to protect the republic, quoting Benjamin Franklin’s warning that it must be “kept.”

Biden closed by honoring the nation’s promise—that ordinary Americans can achieve extraordinary things—and by calling for unity to safeguard democracy.
