As the industry reeled from the brutal killing of Rob and Michele Reiner, the president’s Truth Social post landed like a punch to the gut. Instead of honoring a beloved director and his wife, he framed Reiner’s death as the twisted consequence of “Trump derangement syndrome,” painting a grieving family as little more than a political punchline. When reporters offered him a lifeline to soften his stance, he refused, calling Reiner “deranged” and “very bad for our country.”Kimmel, visibly shaken, used his monologue to draw a line between ordinary political disagreement and what he called a “sick and irresponsible man’s mouth.” Colbert, normally playful, opened in near-eulogy, insisting that other people’s tragedy is “sacred ground.” Meanwhile, details of a “very loud argument” between Rob and his son Nick at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, followed by the couple’s horrific stabbing deaths and Nick’s arrest, turned a national debate about decency into an unbearable human nightmare.
