I Rented My Apartment to a Sweet Old Couple – When They Moved Out, I Was Shocked by What I Found Inside

Hans and Greta seemed like perfect tenants—kind, responsible, and full of fascinating stories from the Netherlands. However, their sudden departure left me wondering what they were hiding.

Hans and Greta moved in despite the apartment’s bare concrete floors. Hans said, “Looks like a blank canvas,” and Greta called it “quite an opportunity.” They insisted on installing new flooring themselves, and I agreed, covering the cost.

For a year, they were ideal tenants, keeping the apartment spotless and paying rent on time. They even invited me for tea often. However, they suddenly started acting strange, packing in a hurry and avoiding me.

One day, they handed me the keys, saying, “We’re leaving.” I was puzzled. After they left, I discovered the flooring was gone. Hans later texted, explaining, “In the Netherlands, it’s customary to take the floor with you when you move out.” They had to leave urgently due to a family emergency.

Though initially shocked, I appreciated their cultural differences and remembered their kindness. Hans and Greta later invited me to visit them in the Netherlands, a gesture I cherished.
