I Lost My Second Baby Until My Son Revealed What He Saw My Husband Do

“Mom. She’s not gone.”

My eight-year-old son said it so quietly I almost didn’t hear him.

I was standing in the middle of his bedroom, holding a glass jar in both hands. An old pickle jar. He’d peeled off the label and written on the lid in black marker, in his crooked second-grade letters: DO NOT TUCH.

It was full of money.

Coins, mostly. Quarters and dimes and a lot of pennies. Crumpled one-dollar bills. A five that looked like it had been through the washing machine. And, folded neatly on top, the fifty-dollar bill his Grandma Tracy had given him for his birthday in August. The one he’d been saving for a Lego set with a volcano in it.

For days, I’d watched that jar fill up.

I’d noticed it on his dresser the week before. Maybe a dollar in the bottom. Then five. Then more. I hadn’t asked about it. I hadn’t asked about anything. I barely had the strength to get out of bed.

But that afternoon, I’d walked past his room on my way to the bathroom, and I’d seen him. Standing at his dresser in his school clothes. Unzipping the front pocket of his backpack. Taking out the three dollars I’d given him that morning for lunch.

And dropping it into the jar.

“Willie,” I’d said from the doorway. “That’s your lunch money.”

He’d jumped. He’d turned around fast.

“I wasn’t hungry.”

“You didn’t eat lunch?”

“I had an apple. Mrs. Kaplan gave me an apple.”
