Our family gathered to celebrate my mother Kayla turning forty five years old. My siblings Nora, Ben, Lucy, Owen, and I were waiting for her homemade cake. My father sat at the head of the table in his perfectly pressed shirt. Instead of a thoughtful gift, he presented her with a wrapped folder tied with a ribbon. He announced to the room that my mother had reached her expiration date and had not aged well. He callously criticized her appearance and stated he did not want to grow old with someone who had let herself go. My youngest brother untied the ribbon to reveal divorce papers inside the folder. My mother sat in stunned silence as my father packed a suitcase and walked out of our home.Within a few weeks my father was proudly displaying his new life online with a much younger woman named Tessa. He flaunted expensive vacations and a polished appearance while my mother struggled to adjust to our broken family. She initially continued to set a place for him at the dinner table out of sheer habit. Eventually with support from her children she began to reclaim her independence. She started working for a local catering company and quickly advanced to managing large events. She cut her hair, bought new clothes, and finally started laughing again. She rebuilt her life around her own happiness rather than waiting for a man who had discarded her.
