Five Minutes After My Divorce Dad Told Me to Change Every PIN

The night my divorce was finalized, my ex-husband, Landon, attempted to purchase a $640,000 necklace using my company card. When the transaction was declined, he called furiously, accusing me of humiliating him. I reminded him that he had never worked for my company or owned any part of it. My father, Martin, observed that Landon had mistaken years of access for ownership.

I demanded that Landon return every company card, key, document, and device by morning. Shortly afterward, an accounting alert revealed a suspicious $1.2 million payment request to a company called Northbridge Advisory, bearing my electronic signature. I had never authorized the transaction. My father immediately contacted a forensic accountant, Daniel Ross, and instructed me to preserve all evidence.

Landon’s girlfriend, Tessa, called next, insisting that his card should remain active because he supposedly deserved compensation for helping build my business. Her confidence revealed how convincingly Landon had portrayed himself as the mastermind behind my success. I realized he had spent years shaping a story in which I was controlling and vindictive, preparing others to distrust me if his behavior came under scrutiny.

The following morning, my assistant, Olivia, showed me an invoice from Northbridge Advisory. Its registered address led to a Delaware mailbox, and the supposed consulting contract carried my signature from a Saturday when I was attending a convention in Chicago. I had never signed such an agreement.

Daniel examined the financial records and discovered approximately $286,000 in questionable expenditures over eighteen months. Smaller transfers had gone to unfamiliar marketing agencies and administrative service providers. Although the evidence suggested a pattern, Daniel cautioned that we needed to establish who initiated each payment before accusing anyone.

One recipient was connected to Richard Cole, an investment consultant Landon had introduced at our anniversary gala two years earlier. I remembered Richard congratulating Landon on what he had supposedly built. Archived records also revealed a private dinner attended by Landon, Richard, and several people connected to Bellhaven’s finances.

By late afternoon, my attorney, Rebecca Shaw, called with a new development. The investigation had uncovered enough irregularities to demand immediate legal and financial action. We secured records, contacted the appropriate banking authorities, and restricted questionable access while preparing to determine who had manipulated the accounts.

For the first time, I stopped worrying about whether Landon would portray me as the villain. I had spent twelve years protecting his feelings at the expense of my own judgment. Now, I intended to protect my company, recover what had been taken, and let the evidence tell the story. Whatever Rebecca had discovered next, I was finally ready to face the truth.
