Farewell, Dr. Jill

First Lady Jill Biden has ended her 40-year teaching career, concluding her tenure at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). She revealed during a virtual event honoring educators that she had taught her final English and writing class, marking the end of 15 years at NOVA and four decades in education.

Joined by union leaders Randi Weingarten and Becky Pringle, Biden reflected, “Being your First Lady has been the honor of my life. But being your colleague has been the work of my life.” Her remarks highlighted the deep connection she feels to the teaching community and the pride she takes in her career as an educator.

NOVA President Anne Kress praised her as an exceptional teacher whose dedication inspired students nationwide. Jill Biden, who began teaching in 1976, made history as the first U.S. First Lady to maintain a full-time career while serving, leaving behind a legacy of passion, perseverance, and lifelong commitment to education.
