The scent of bitter coffee and sizzling oil greeted me like an old habit. My name is Laura Moreno. I was thirty-eight then, and I’d been waiting tables there for twelve years. It wasn’t glamorous, but it kept the lights on and my life steady enough to manage.

He appeared when winter first set in.

I didn’t accept any important positions. I continued working as a waitress. By choice.

Sometimes, when children come in on their own, I sit with them for a moment. I don’t ask too many questions.

Alejandro comes some mornings, without any visible bodyguards. He sits in the corner. This time he pays.

And always leave an extra plate on the table.
