Denzel Washington subtly announces retirement during Australian interview

Denzel Washington just announced a slew of new projects and with it comes a surprise that many may not have seen coming.

Denzel Washington, 69, is preparing to step away from Hollywood after completing a final slate of films, signaling the end of a career that has spanned decades.

Speaking with Australia’s Today show, Washington shared, “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. Probably not that many.”

His upcoming endeavors include reprising his role as Othello, a character he first played at age 22.

“I’m about to play Othello at 70,” the two-time Academy Award winner revealed.

Beyond that, he’s hinted at collaborating with Steve McQueen and Ryan Coogler, who is reportedly crafting a role for him in the next Black Panther film. Washington also mentioned projects like King Lear before teasing, “After that, I’m going to retire.”

Washington’s career began in 1977 with the made-for-television film Wilma, followed by his feature debut in 1981’s Carbon Copy. Since then, he has become one of the most respected actors in Hollywood, known for unforgettable performances in films such as GloryTraining Day, and Malcolm X. His work has consistently showcased his talent and passion, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous accolades.

Earlier this year, Washington opened up about his desire to be involved with Gladiator II.

“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker,” the actor said.

At 2 p.m., in the middle of a company meeting, I nervously checked the bedroom camera to see how my wife and our two-week-old son were doing. She was still frail from a life-threatening postpartum hemorrhage, and what I saw made my heart stop. My mother was ruthlessly snatching the baby from her arms and shoving her toward the kitchen, even though her surgical wound had barely begun to heal. My mother hissed, ‘Blood loss is no excuse for a dirty house; get up and scrub the floor.’ As my wife collapsed in pain, clutching her stitches, I walked out of the meeting, called a locksmith, and vowed that my mother would never set foot in our home again.

My wife, Sarah, had just crawled back from the brink of death after a catastrophic childbirth. The doctor’s orders were absolute: total bed rest. Her internal stitches were so fragile…
