I realized love involves standing up for the person who sacrificed everything for you. My mother had me at seventeen losing her high school milestones and carefree teenage years when my biological father abandoned us. She spent my childhood working exhausting graveyard shifts and cleaning houses to provide for me while quietly mourning her lost youth. As my senior prom approached I decided to give her back the special night she missed by inviting her to be my date. My mother was overwhelmed with emotion and worried about embarrassing me but my supportive stepfather was thrilled and immediately helped us prepare for the event.
