Claire, 29, believed her husband, Ryan, was devoted to their family. Because he worked on cruise ships, he spent months away and missed the birth of their twin daughters, Ava and Mia. For three exhausting months, Claire cared for the babies alone while Ryan repeatedly promised that everything would improve when he returned home.
Determined to surprise him, Claire spent much of her remaining savings traveling with the twins to meet him at the cruise terminal. Instead of welcoming his wife and daughters, Ryan appeared with another woman wrapped around him and kissed her passionately. When Claire confronted him, he admitted to having relationships with multiple women during his contracts, dismissing his infidelity as “male nature.”
Even more painfully, Ryan’s father, Gerald, criticized him only for getting caught and told Claire to stop making a scene. Back home, Ryan acted as though nothing had happened and reminded Claire that she had nowhere else to go. When he announced that he had received a promotion that would keep him home every night, Claire realized she needed to escape the marriage.
With help from her best friend, Dana, Claire arranged childcare and prepared to return to work. Ryan threatened that she and the children would lose everything if his job were jeopardized. However, a doorbell camera had recorded his admission about sleeping with passengers.
During a dinner celebrating Ryan’s promotion, Claire played the recording for his boss, Mr. Holloway. He explained that relationships with passengers violated company policy and postponed Ryan’s promotion pending an investigation. Ryan blamed Claire for exposing him, while Gerald accused her of destroying the family.
Refusing to remain in a marriage built on betrayal and intimidation, Claire moved into Dana’s spare room with her daughters and began arranging a separation. Although money was tight and their future uncertain, Ryan’s mother privately offered help with the babies, admitting that she regretted staying in her own unhappy marriage.
As Claire sat at Dana’s kitchen table, she realized that rebuilding their lives would be difficult, but she and her daughters no longer had to mistake cruelty for love.
