What Is the Red, Smelly Thing Growing in My Backyard?

A bright red-orange fungus appearing in your garden overnight can look strange and even alarming. It may resemble coral or a tiny alien, but it could be a red stinkhorn mushroom. These unusual fungi are known for their distinctive shapes, rapid growth, and unpleasant smell. Although their appearance can be surprising, they usually play a useful role in nature by breaking down decaying organic material.

Red stinkhorns often grow in mulch, compost, leaf litter, and decaying wood. They typically have slender, upright bodies in shades of red, orange, or pink, sometimes with a dark, sticky coating containing spores. Some also emerge from a white, egg-like structure at the base. However, several species look similar, so identifying the exact fungus from its color alone can be difficult.

The unpleasant smell is one of the stinkhorn’s most recognizable features. Many produce an odor resembling rotting meat or sewage to attract flies and other insects. When these insects land on the sticky spore mass, they pick up spores and carry them to other locations, helping the fungus reproduce. Despite its foul smell, the odor alone does not indicate that the mushroom is releasing dangerous gas.

Stinkhorns can appear almost overnight because the visible mushroom develops rapidly when conditions are favorable. The fungus may have been growing beneath the soil or mulch for weeks. Rain, moisture, warm temperatures, and decaying organic material can encourage its sudden appearance. In most gardens, stinkhorns are not a serious problem because they help recycle nutrients and do not automatically indicate that nearby plants are unhealthy.

If the smell bothers you, wear gardening gloves and carefully remove the visible mushroom, including its egg-like base if possible. Place it in a sealed bag for disposal and wash your hands afterward. Avoid excessive watering and maintain your mulch beds, but remember that the fungus may return because its underground network can remain in the soil. **Never eat an unidentified wild mushroom**, and keep children and pets from consuming it. If a child or pet eats one, contact a poison-control service or veterinarian promptly.
