Seventeen Missed Calls… From the Daughter I Lost

At 3 a.m., my phone vibrated nonstop. Seventeen missed calls from my daughter, followed by a message that made my blood run cold: “Dad, help! Come fast!” I jumped out of bed, grabbed my keys, and raced through the empty streets, imagining every possible disaster.

When I burst into her house, my daughter and her fiancé stared at me in confusion. “Dad? What are you doing here?” she asked. “You called me! You said you needed help!” I replied, showing her my phone. She shook her head. “I never called you.”

Then I showed her the number. Her face turned pale, and she whispered, “Dad… that’s Helen’s number.”

Helen was my youngest daughter, who had died in a car accident the previous year. She was only nineteen, with the brightest laugh and a smile that could light up any room. Seeing her number again felt like reopening a wound I had struggled for months to heal.

Before I could say anything, another message appeared: “I am still waiting. Where are you?” My hands trembled. For one heartbreaking moment, I wondered if Helen had somehow found a way to reach me. I called the number, barely able to breathe.

A young woman answered, sobbing. “Dad? Where are you? Please, I need help!” I swallowed my emotions and gently replied, “I’m not your father. Who are you trying to reach?” Her desperate voice reminded me of how frightened my own daughter might have sounded.

She explained that her car had broken down in a remote area. She had been calling her father repeatedly, but he had recently changed his phone number. She was still using his old number, saved in her contacts as “Dad.”

That old number now belonged to me. It had once been Helen’s, and somehow, a stranger’s emergency had brought her memory crashing back into my life. I stayed on the phone with the young woman, comforting her until help finally arrived.

Afterward, I sat alone in my car and cried until sunrise. For a few impossible seconds, it had felt as though Helen had reached across the distance between life and death. Though I knew the truth, that night reminded me that love never truly disappears.
