My 12-year-old son spent his summer mowing lawns for elderly neighbors for free

Have you ever gone from being incredibly proud of your kid to absolutely terrified for them in a matter of minutes?

Because that happened to me three weeks before my son started seventh grade, and I still think about how differently that afternoon could have gone.

My son, Ethan, is twelve. He’s not one of those children parents describe as perfect while everyone who knows them quietly rolls their eyes. Ethan forgets homework, leaves wet towels on his floor, and somehow believes empty cereal boxes belong back inside the pantry.

But he has a good heart. I learned exactly how good this summer.

A few days after school ended, I looked out our kitchen window and saw Ethan pushing our lawn mower down the sidewalk.

“Where are you going?” I called out.

He stopped. “Mrs. Hall needs help.”

Mrs. Hall lived four houses away. She was seventy-eight and stubborn enough to make age feel personally offensive. Apparently, Ethan had seen her trying to mow her lawn in ninety-degree heat.

When he came home an hour later, his shirt was soaked. “She tried to pay me twenty dollars,” he said.

“Did you take it?”

He looked insulted. “Do you think other old people around here need their lawns done?”

That should tell you everything. The next morning, Ethan appeared at breakfast and asked, “Do you think other old people around here need their lawns done?”

I shrugged. “Probably.”

He nodded like I had just confirmed something important. Suddenly, he had a summer project.Ethan smiled, took another bite of cereal, and went back to complaining about his math homework. He was still a twelve-year-old boy who left his socks on the living room rug and forgot to put the milk back in the fridge. But as I watched him, I knew that whatever challenges the world brought his way, he had a heart strong enough to face them—one lawn, one flower, and one Saturday at a time.
