I Let My Husband Believe I Had Paid Off His $150,000 Debt — The Next Morning

The coffee machine hissed.
Julian stopped laughing long enough to glance at his watch.
“Vivian, we don’t have all morning.”
That almost made me smile.
For six years, I had waited for him.
Waited through dinners he missed. Weekends he canceled. Nights he came home smelling of hotel soap and told me I worried too much.
Now he couldn’t give me thirty seconds to make coffee.

I took my cup from beneath the spout.
“Put my grandmother’s photograph down, Beatrice.”
His mother had another frame in her hands.
“Oh, don’t start.”
“Carefully.”
Something in my voice made her hesitate.
She placed it on the counter.
Julian pushed the divorce envelope toward me again.
“You can make this easy.”
“I intend to.”

I set my coffee down, took my phone from my pocket, and opened the email my attorney had sent at 9:17 the previous morning.
Then I placed the phone on the island.
Julian barely glanced at it.
“What’s that supposed to be?”
“The confirmation you never asked to read.”
“I saw the payment go through.”
“Yes.”
“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
“Yes.”
“So?”

I looked him directly in the eye.
“So you saw money change hands. You assumed that meant your obligation disappeared.”
His father stopped folding a cardboard box.
It was a small movement.
Or rather, the sudden absence of one.
I noticed.
Julian didn’t.
“Stop playing games.”
“I didn’t pay off your loan, Julian.”
Elena lowered my mug.
“I purchased it.”

For a moment, the only sound in the kitchen was the refrigerator motor.
Then Julian gave a short, impatient laugh.
“That’s the same thing.”
“No. Your lender received its money. In exchange, it assigned the loan documents and its rights under them to my company.”
I swiped to the next page.

Upstairs, I opened my wardrobe and took out the emerald-green robe.
I slipped it on, tied the belt, and went to open the bedroom window.
The night air was cool.
Somewhere down the street, people were still laughing.
Tomorrow, I would have leftover cake for breakfast.
Then I would decide what came next.
