Pioneering BET personality and beloved radio host, dies at 58

Angela Stribling, a pioneering television personality, radio host, and jazz singer, has died at the age of 58. Her husband, Ken Washington, announced that she passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2026, following a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. Her sister Darlene and her husband were by her side.

Stribling became widely known through her groundbreaking work at Black Entertainment Television (BET). During the 1990s, she hosted BET’s entertainment news program “Screen Scene” and became an important figure in the network’s jazz programming. She also hosted shows including “Jazz Central,” “Jazz Discovery,” and “Jazz Scene.”

Her broadcasting career also included work with WJZ-TV, WJLA-TV, and Washington, D.C.’s WHUR radio. She became the first woman to host WHUR’s influential “The Original Quiet Storm” program, further establishing herself as a respected voice in radio.

In later years, Stribling hosted “Pillow Talk with Angela,” a popular late-night radio program focused on relationships, music, and conversation. She was also a talented jazz vocalist and performed alongside major artists, including Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan.

Throughout her career, Stribling interviewed many famous personalities, including Bill Clinton, Janet Jackson, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent, Brandy, and Sterling K. Brown. Her distinctive voice was also featured in national advertising campaigns for companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Folgers, and Allstate.

Stribling appeared on television and in film as well, including a cameo as a television anchor in Eddie Murphy’s 1992 movie “The Distinguished Gentleman.”

Her husband remembered her for her love, kindness, optimism, and ability to inspire others. Colleagues and friends also paid tribute to her lasting impact on broadcasting and the many people she touched throughout her life.
