Marina Vlady, the acclaimed French actress whose career included more than 80 films, has died at the age of 88. Her children said she died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family and beloved animals, describing her life as long and beautiful.
Born Catherine Marina de Poliakoff-Baïdaroff in 1938, Vlady grew up near Paris in a family of Russian immigrants. Her father, Vladimir Poliakoff, was an opera singer and former French Army aviator, while her mother, Militza, had been a ballet dancer. All four sisters entered the arts, and Marina began performing at a very young age.
She left school at 12 and trained as a dancer at the Paris Opera before appearing on screen as a child. At only 16, she received the Suzanne Bianchetti Prize, marking her as one of France’s promising young actresses.
During the early years of her career, Vlady was often cast as beautiful, rebellious, or seductive young women. However, she deliberately pursued different kinds of roles and moved between commercial productions and more challenging films.
Her greatest professional achievement came in 1963, when she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for The Conjugal Bed. The performance also earned her a Golden Globe. She later recalled being so surprised by the news that she literally fell from her chair.
In 1965, she appeared in Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight, one of her few English-language roles. Her career also included collaborations with filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard.
Vlady’s interests extended beyond acting. She recorded two albums with her sisters and became an outspoken advocate for abortion rights in France. She also protested against the deportation of Arab workers.
Her personal life included a decade-long relationship with Soviet singer, actor, and poet Vladimir Vysotsky. She later worked with physician and activist Léon Schwartzenberg to help establish DAL, an organization supporting the right to housing.
Marina Vlady’s legacy therefore reached far beyond cinema, encompassing acting, music, activism, and influential personal relationships.
