The Name Printed On Page Four, And The Slow Careful Year That Followed For My Son And Me

My mother. Dead eleven years. Nolan had used her name because it matched mine on an old insurance record and because he assumed no one would ever read page four. He had added her as an authorized driver in the second year of the lease so that Delphine could be covered without a credit check she would not have passed.

Emmett made the call. Nolan answered laughing, then stopped laughing, and the silence on that speaker lasted long enough for me to notice the clock on the wall. He brought the car in at 2:15 with Delphine in the passenger seat. Neither of them looked at me in the lobby.

Her mother died in June. I went. I sat in the back and left before the reception, and Delphine followed me out to the parking lot and stood there not saying anything for a while, and then she said thank you for coming, and then she said my name. Not Nolan’s mom. Marlene.

Nolan bought a used Corolla in August with his own credit, which turned out to be fine, which he had never bothered to check. He pays for it himself. He calls on Sundays.

I did not forgive anyone dramatically. I just stopped keeping the ledger, which took me longer than turning in a car.

I spent thirty-eight months paying for a vehicle so my son could feel like a man in front of his wife, and never once asked myself why I let him. The answer is that being needed was the only seat at that table anybody ever offered me. I turned the car in and took a different one, and it turns out you can be a woman with a name instead of a woman with a checkbook, but only if you are willing to go first.
