Twelve days after my husband Daniel died, I caught my neighbor Monica climbing over my fence with bags full of apples from our garden. At first, I thought she simply wanted the fruit, but then she mentioned something from twenty-seven years earlier that only Daniel and I were supposed to know.
Daniel had always loved our apple trees. Before he died, he often spent time caring for them with our eight-year-old son Ben. After his funeral, Monica returned and took almost the entire harvest. She even told me that Daniel was gone and the fruit would eventually rot anyway.
The next morning, I discovered that every tree had been stripped bare. Broken branches and Daniel’s old ladder were scattered across the yard. I realized Monica’s actions probably had nothing to do with the apples.
I searched her name and Daniel’s and eventually found an old photograph from twenty-seven years earlier. I also remembered the secret behind the red light Daniel had run the night we met. Monica somehow knew about it.
I decided not to scream at her. Instead, I created a large sign in front of her house exposing that she had taken my husband’s harvest only twelve days after his death. When Monica saw an old photograph of herself with Daniel, her attitude changed.
Then a young man named Luke appeared. He revealed that Daniel was his biological father.
Monica explained that she and Daniel had dated before he met me. She became pregnant with Luke, but Daniel never knew he had another son. She had moved back into the neighborhood years later and watched Daniel from a distance, always intending to tell him about Luke. But she never found the courage, and Daniel died before they could meet.
Monica admitted that she stole the apples because she was angry. She had watched me have twenty-seven years with Daniel while Luke had never even known his father.
I was still hurt and had not forgiven her, but I realized Luke had lost his father too. Instead of continuing the fight, I brought Monica an apple pie made from the few apples left behind.
I told her that Luke was Daniel’s son—and that meant he was also Ben’s brother.
For the first time, I stopped seeing Luke as Monica’s son and saw him as my husband’s son.
