Part 1
I found my thirty-one-year-old daughter, Hannah, and my five-year-old grandson, Wyatt, asleep inside an aging sedan parked behind a grocery store in Dayton, Ohio. Blankets covered the windows against the cold, and a nearly empty juice box rested beside Wyatt’s tiny shoes. Hannah looked exhausted, embarrassed, and far older than her years as she admitted that her husband, Duncan, and his mother, Miriam, had forced them from the home. Five years earlier, I had sold inherited family land to buy that three-bedroom house as a wedding gift, but I had deliberately kept the deed in my own name because paperwork lasts longer than promises. Seeing Wyatt curled beneath a thin blanket made me realize the marriage had been breaking long before anyone admitted the truth.
Back at my home, Hannah described years of criticism, manipulation, and constant interference from Miriam while Duncan always defended his mother instead of his wife. The final argument erupted after Wyatt accidentally spilled juice on a new rug. Miriam screamed at the frightened child, and when Hannah refused to apologize for protecting her son, Duncan ordered them to leave immediately. He never called to check whether they were safe. While unpacking her belongings, Hannah handed me copies of financial documents she had secretly made before leaving. As I examined the loan papers, my heart stopped. My signature appeared on multiple refinancing agreements I had never signed, and suddenly everything made horrifying sense.
