My grandson called me from the District Attorney’s Office at 2:47 a.m.

Part 1

At 2:47 a.m., my phone shattered the silence. “Grandma… I’m at the District Attorney’s Office,” Noah whispered, his voice trembling. “Lydia says I pushed her down the stairs, but she came after me first. Dad believes her.” Those words erased every peaceful thought from my mind. After thirty-two years commanding detectives in Chicago’s Major Crimes Unit, I knew panic often hid the truth. Noah sat alone with a fresh bandage over his eyebrow, while Mark stood beside Lydia, who looked strangely composed despite claiming she had been violently attacked. I listened as Noah described Lydia swinging a heavy candlestick before accusing him of pushing her. Then I noticed something no one else had. As Lydia glanced toward Noah, her confident expression suddenly vanished because he had reached inside his backpack and slowly pulled out a small black object.
